The Morgan County Commission approved plans for a new animal shelter and environmental services building and authorized Chairman John Glasscock to put the proposed projects out for bids at a regular meeting on Tuesday. Both facilities will be constructed on an 11-acre site in the Hartselle- Morgan County Industrial Park.
Glasscock said bids would be sought as soon as Hartselle Planning Commission approves the consolidation of a 10-acre and a one-acre parcel and the county receives title to the property.
he said.
The plans for both buildings, which were prepared by architect Fred Underwood of Underwood &Associates of Decatur, show substantial improvement over existing facilities. The animal shelter is now located in the Hartselle Landfill and is overcrowded and lacking in many respects. The environmental services facility is located at the District 2 shop in Hartselle. Its office is in a mobile home.
The new animal shelter will have 51dog runs and 21 cat runs. It will provide two staff offices, a receiving office with vestibule, restroom and showers for employees, public restrooms, laundry, dog and cat receiving rooms, food storage rooms, staff break room, adoption intervention room and a mothers and babies room.
The environmental services plan calls for three offices, a waiting room; break room for employees, bathrooms and showers, locker room and kitchen. It also has two maintenance bays, a covered parking deck with electrical connections and a wash bay.
