Feb. 14, 1958-Husbands who forgot that today was Valentine’s Day were in hot water as their wives were concerned. (Most remembered.)
Feb. 15, 1958-Many Joe Wheeler EMC customers are without power today. These outages were caused by yesterday’s heavy snow. Co-op manager Floyd Anderson says his crews are working around the clock to get everyone’s power restored.
Feb. 15, 1958-An altercation took place at the Falkville jail today. An inmate allegedly attacked the chief of police who responded in kind, causing severe head injuries to the prisoner. The prisoner’s family deny that the attack of the chief was in self-defense but instead was unprovoked.
Feb. 16, 1958-Local Howard College alumni were interested to learn today that a new president had been selected for their alma mater. He is Dr. Leslie Wright, who will move from Montgomery soon to begin his duties at Howard.
Feb. 16, 1958-Hartselle stores were quickly selling out of their inventories of boots, galoshes, portable heaters, kerosene lamps, and tire chains due to the heavy snow that still makes getting about, whether on foot or in a vehicle, very treacherous.
Feb. 17, 1958-Bob Freeman, former Decatur Red Raider and Auburn QB who is now with the Cleveland Browns, spoke to the Hartselle Civitan Club tonight. He said most pro players realize this isn’t a lifetime job so they want to make as much money as possible while they can.
Feb. 18, 1958-Auburn’s board of trustees is doing everything possible to get the school of engineering’s accreditation restored. Faculty salaries will be increased while student loads will be reduced. These actions were welcome news to local API alumni.
Feb. 19, 1958-Stiefelmeyer’s in Cullman has long been a popular shopping destination for southern Morgan County residents. The store founder, C. A. Stiefelmeyer, died at Cullman Hospital tonight at the age of 92. The merchant was born just a year after the Civil War ended.
Feb. 19, 1958-Cigarette smokers everywhere were warned by a congressional committee today that filters won’t necessarily provide protection against lung cancer, which smokes are increasingly alleged to cause.
Feb. 20, 1958-Dr. Gilford Quarles, a man familiar to many Hartselle workers at Redstone, says that interplanetary travel will be an accomplished fact sometime between 1993-1998. Dr. Quarles is a top aide to Gen. John Medaris, ABMA commander.
