Funeral for John “Pete” Ellenburg Jr., 68, of Hartselle will be Thursday (today), Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Phillip Hines and Dr. Jeff Redmond officiating.
Burial will be in Forrest Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Ellenburg died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born Dec. 28, 1939, in Morgan County to John Henry Ellenburg and Louie Mentora Bagwell Ellenburg.
He grew up at Ryan Cross Roads picking cotton, hunting, fishing and playing basketball. He pursued a career in education and received bachelors, masters and AA degrees in English, counseling and education administration. He served in the Alabama National Guard and received many marksmanship awards.
It was his joy to return to Ryan School and finish his career in education as principal there. During retirement, he enjoyed hunting with his black and tan hounds and relaxing at home.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Laura Chesteen Fowler Ellenburg of Hartselle; a son, Jason Fowler Ellenburg of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters, Heather Ellenburg Woo of Huntsville and Miriam Ellenburg Fipps of Birmingham; three brothers, Tom Ellenburg and Ken Ellenburg, both of Joppa and Jerry Ellenburg of Troy; a sister, Gail Simpson of Hartselle; and a grandchild, Graham Woo.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Webster, Harold Brown, Johnny Johns, Mickey Burns, Frankie Fowler and Ricky Fowler. Alternate pallbearers will be Jeff Fowler, Ricky Garner and Bob Pettit.
