Math scores strong, reading, language slip

Academic excellence on the whole with a slight slippage in reading and language scores was the message delivered to the Hartselle School Board by Hartselle High School principal Jerry Reeves.
Reeves used a video presentation, with input from several staff members, to inform the school board of student achievements during the past year. Scores from the State Exit Exam highlighted the presentation.
He said all but four members of the senior class have met the state’s graduation requirements and expressed confidence they will meet the requirements before the end of the school year.
Tenth graders who took the exit exam in 2007 scored fourth highest in the state in the math component. However, their scores in reading and language were about nine points lower than the class ahead of them.
Reeves said the school is meeting all Annual Yearly Progress requirements under the “No Child Left Behind”: law and has reduced the annual dropout rate from 44 to four since 2003-04.
