Barkley Bridge uses fifth graders as presenters in reading observance

Barkley Bridge Elementary School used its fifth graders to read and illustrate Dr. Seuss stories to K-4 students in observance of “Read Across America Day” on Feb. 29.
Fifth graders, working individually or in small groups of three to six, were challenged to choose a book from the library and present it to small groups of K-4 students in the library. They were encouraged to read the book over and over and even memorize parts of it. Further, they were asked to bring the story alive by using simple props, personal stories, songs, skits, demonstrations and drawings.
Five story stations were set up in the library and small groups of students (six to eight) rotated from one station to the next at 12-15 minute intervals.
The fifth graders got as much out of it as the younger students,” Land said. “They got to practice creative ways to share books and storytelling, develop public speaking skills and serve as positive role models for their schoolmates.”
