March 13, 1958-Mayor John Burleson had six miscreants to deal with in his municipal court this week. Five were alleged to have been publicly drunk while a sixth was accused of running a red light. All were found guilty as charged.
March 13, 1958-Virgil Bailey and Ed Harris currently have major residential construction projects underway. Bailey is building on Nelson Street while Harris is building a new home on Cedar.
March 14, 1958-Earl Cook Jr. and Susan Stewart, both of Hartselle, received their B.S. diplomas today during API winter quarter graduation exercises. Cook majored in agriculture while Susan is aspiring to be a schoolteacher like her mom, Mrs. Opal Stewart.
March 15, 1958-Hartselle native and leading U.S. Senator John Sparkman today urged President Eisenhower and Soviet Premier Khrushchev today to take a coffee break together in the interest of relieving international tensions.
March 15, 1958-Area labor union men meeting in convention in Birmingham today said that five of the current crop of gubernatorial candidates were acceptable to them. Circuit Judge George Wallace is the strongest aspirant to win the union endorsement.
March 16, 1958-Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Sample were held today at her residence on Milner Street. Pallbearers were Charlie Oden, Guy Roberts, Billy Don Mitchell, Leo Barclift, Orville Tanner, and Hugh Penn. Mrs. Sample was the widow of the late beloved Hartselle physician Dr. Eugene Sample.
March 16, 1958-Hartselle Episcopalians met for the first time today in the studios of radio station WHRT. Leading the effort to establish an Anglican congregation here is Dinsmore Lindsey, an employee at Redstone. Leland Lindsey has been designated acolyte for the new mission church.
March 17, 1958-Alabama’s first spring football practice under new head Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant will be held tomorrow afternoon. For various reasons 11 players quit school rather than report for spring training under Coach Bryant who has a reputation for being a tough disciplinarian.
March 18, 1958-Jimmy Faulkner, a leading Democratic aspirant for governor of Alabama, campaigned here in Hartselle this morning. The famous Blackwood Brothers Quartet helped draw a big crowd for this event.
March 19, 1958 Right of way alone for the new interstate highway program, one artery of which will probably run east of Hartselle, is expected to cost in excess of $93 million. Highway construction will take about 15 years.
