Three local basketball players were named to the Alabama Sports Writers’ Association’s all-state teams recently after leading their respective schools to the Northwest Regionals in Hanceville.
Brewer’s Emily Dabbs was a Class 5A first-team selection this season, while Hartselle’s Jessi Smith earned second-team honors. Danville’s Alaina Fitzgerald was an honorable mention choice in Class 3A.
Dabbs’ selection may have been the biggest surprise, not because she isn’t a tremendous talent, but because she averaged just under 20 minutes of playing time per game.
She averaged 16.5 points per game for the Lady Patriots with 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals.
Brewer finished with a 28-3 record this season after coming within one win of reaching the state finals.
Smith, a University of Alabama signee, also led her team to the regionals this year.
Fitzgerald was the lone senior on a Danville team filled with underclassmen. She was a deadly shooter from both outside and inside.
Danville lost in the Northwest Regional semifinals to Elkmont.
Crawley earns invite
Brewer’s 5-foot-11 junior guard Morgan Crawley has been invited to play in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South all-star game this summer at the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
The two North-South games will be part of the 12th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition in Huntsville July 14-18.
The two girls’ teams and two boys’ teams will square off in a Thursday, July 17th doubleheader beginning with the girls’ tip-off at 6 p.m. at the University of Alabama-Huntsville gym.
The boys’ contest game will start at 8 p.m.
Crawley helped lead the Lady Patriots to the Northwest Regional finals before the team’s season was ended with a loss to Wenonah.
Joining Crawley on the North team will be several top players, including Kylie Black of Speake, Bob Jones’ Kellie Cook and Jala Harris, Morgan Duncan of Red Bay, Karneshia Garrett of Wenonah, Bailee Robinson of Elkmont, Alex Strickland of Clay-Chalkville, and Danielle Vaughn and Adrienne Webb of Sparkman.
