March 27, 1958-Bob Orr is representing UA at an international affairs conference at Auburn today. Bob was appointed as Capstone representative by the new president, Dr. Frank A. Rose. One of the featured speakers is U.S. senator and Hartselle native, John Sparkman.
March 28, 1958-Paul White is erecting a three-bedroom house on Woodland Drive the estimated cost of which is $8,500.
March 29, 1958-Scottie Stone and Marguerite Livingston were married this afternoon in a beautiful ceremony at Decatur First Methodist. The vows were read by Rev. Otis Kirby. Participants in the wedding included Jo Anne Livingston, Loretta Livingston, Milner Snuggs, Bill Stone, Bill Penn, Charles Quinn, and Hanspeter Gut.
March 29, 1958-Mrs. Etta Sobotka passed away at her Hartselle home this morning. Mrs. Sobotka, the widow of Robert Sobotka, was a member of the Christian Church, the Culture Club, and O.E.S.
March 29, 1958-Gubernatorial candidate A. W. Todd of Russellville, who also serves as Alabama’s ag commissioner, campaigned in Hartselle this afternoon. Providing entertainment were Wally Fowler and the Sons of Song.
March 29, 1958-Local Tide fans were interested in the report new coach Bear Bryant gave concerning spring practice today. With workouts now at the halfway point, Coach Bryant said he wasn’t happy. “We’ve got a few football players, a very few, who go all the time. We’ve got some who go part of the time. We’ve got some who don’t go any of the time.” The last group is not expected to be around much longer.
March 30, 1958-Thieves made off with 12 dozen eggs from Booth Feed and Farm Supply tonight. About $30 was also taken in the robbery.
March 31, 1958-Redstone Arsenal is asking all communities, including Hartselle, from whom their workers come to participate in daylight saving time this summer. Since Redstone is in contact continuously with Washington it is essential that this area also be on DST.
April 1, 1958-Rebel leader Fidel Castro today launched the first phase of his “total war” to oust President Fulgencio Batista. It is expected that Batista will be able to hold on to his leadership position despite the onslaught of the Castro-led rebels.
April 2, 1958-Bids to construct a new elementary school here in Hartselle will be opened tomorrow afternoon in Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten’s office. The new grade school will have six classrooms at the outset. Funds won’t be sufficient to have a cafeteria.
