Hartselle sweeps pair of doubleheaders

Ryan Joy’s grand slam helped Hartselle start off a perfect weekend as the Tigers swept Decatur in a doubleheader Friday.
The Tigers beat the Red Raiders 6-5 in the opening game and added a 13-6 victory in the nightap.
Hartselle scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning of the first game with an RBI single from Garrett Turrentine.
After falling behind 3-1, Hartselle took the lead for good in the fourth inning with four hits, including Joy’s grand slam.
The Tigers loaded the bases with singles from Zach Waddell, Will Chappell and Mike Hasse. Walton Ashwander walked to force in a run, setting up Joy’s game-winner.
Decatur managed to trim the Hartselle lead to 6-4 with a run in the top of the fifth inning after Josh Doyle hit two batters and gave up an RBI single.
But the Tigers got out of the jam when Andrew Howard came on to get the final out of the inning on a fly to short.
Decatur added a run in the top of the sixth to cut the gap to just one run, but the Red Raiders could get no closer.
Josh Doyle picked up the win for the Tigers. Andrew Howard and J.C. Bates worked in relief with Bates earning the save.
Hartselle 12, Tuscaloosa Co. 0
J.C. Bates threw a shutout as Hartselle beat Tuscaloosa County Saturday at Hillcrest High School.
Bates finished with three strikeouts.
Garrett Turrentine led the Tigers’ offensive attack with a 3-run homer. He also singled in the win.
Will Chappell was perfect at the plate with three hits in three at-bats. He had a 2-run homer for the Tigers.
Ryan Joy, Luke Bole and Zach Waddell each had a double for Hartselle with a run scored. Ethan Widener had a double and scored two runs.
Hartselle 2, Hillcrest 0
Luke Bole struck out eight in a 2-0 win over Hillcrest in a game that was stopped in the fifth inning because of rain.
Ryan Joy homered to lead off the game, giving Bole all the offensive support he needed.
Ethan Widener drove in the Tigers’ second run with a hit to score Tony Weaver.
Bole allowed just two hits in the win.
