April 17, 1958-J. E. Johnson has now been issued the building permit needed in order to begin construction of the new elementary school on the west side of town. Mr. Johnson puts the value of the school (now Crestline) at $67,500.
April 18, 1958-MCHS beat Decatur in baseball this afternoon by an 8-7 score. This win came despite the commission of six errors by the Hartselle team. Lothian Smallwood pitched the entire game for MCHS, striking out ten Red Raiders. Jerry Atkins got a double and single, the latter being the deciding hit of the game.
April 18, 1958-Hartselle police took two airmen into custody this morning. They surrendered here to face charges of shooting a fellow member of the AF in Giles County, Tennessee shortly after midnight.
April 19, 1958-Hartselle’s V. J. Elmore, Bailey Style Shop, Roberts Brothers, King’s Cleaners, and Minor Jewelry were burglarized tonight. The five and dime suffered the greatest loss when $600 was removed from a tin box in the office. In a residential robbery, money was taken from a man’s pants while he was asleep in bed. A set of keys, including the house key, had been left in the family car parked in front of the residence.
April 20, 1958-Attorney General John Patterson has been asked by Morgan County Probate Judge T. C. Almon to rule on whether his office can operate on DST this summer. The office is required by law to be open daily 9-4 but Almon believes this refers only to CST.
April 20, 1958-Applications are being taken for the position of substitute clerk-carrier at the Hartselle post office. Acting Postmaster Hugh F. Penn says that the successful candidate will be paid $1.82 an hour.
April 21, 1958-Today is the last day to register to vote in the May 6 Democratic primary. In order to be considered for registration you need to be at least 21 and to have already paid your poll tax.
April 22, 1958-Hartselle Auburn fans are eagerly awaiting today’s press conference at which AD Jeff Beard will tell the Tigers’ side relating to alleged recruiting violations. The War Eagles have been under much greater NCAA scrutiny since becoming a football power under the direction of head football Coach Ralph (Shug) Jordan. The Tigers were unbeaten in the ‘57 campaign and won the AP national championship.
April 23, 1958-John Warren, a 4-H’er at MCHS, won the top prize at the FFA Fat Stock Show in Hartselle today. John’s winning calf was a 915-pound Hereford. His dad is J. B. Warren, long-time Morgan County teacher. Dwight Pettit had the winning Aberdeen steer.
