May 1, 1958-The many friends and supporters of Dr. John T. Burch, age 82, beloved Hartselle physician who is now in his third term as the Morgan County tax assessor, are distressed to learn that he is in very serious condition at Decatur General Hospital. Dr. Burch suffered a heart attack while at the Caddell Drug soda fountain in Decatur this morning.
May 2, 1958-Leaders of the Morgan County Singing Convention are currently making plans for their next session in a couple of months. It will be held at New Friendship church, north of Brooksville. It will be hard to top the recent Round Top convention which featured the McCoys as guest singers and such excellent song leaders as Homer Shoemaker, Jack Miller, M. A. Hardin, Fred and Vivian Summerford, Richard Wallace, W. T. Willoughby, Grady Parker, Acie Hightower, Tennis Sparkman, Guy Walker, Annie Jo Holmes, Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Brown, Plumer
Oden, Malcolm Stevenson, Rev. D. R. Jarrett, Don Key, and Cullie Gibson. Vernon Sharp is the current convention president.
May 3, 1958-”Going steady,” the new custom quickly being adopted by teens nationwide, is the subject of a movie by the same name that opens tomorrow night at the Bowline Drive-in Theatre. Numerous Hartsellians 13-19 plan to see the film as well as not a few concerned parents.
May 4, 1958-Local UA students were grieving today over the suicide death of one of their fellow Capstone students. The young man was enrolled in C&BA and had recently been having problems with his grades.
May 5, 1968-Voters needing a ride to the polls in order to cast ballots in tomorrow’s primary can call Smith’s Restaurant, SP 3-9126. Supporters of gubernatorial candidate Jimmy Faulkner are providing transportation.
May 6, 1958-An election returns party will be held tonight at the George Wallace for Governor headquarters in the old city hall building. Television service will be available and local campaign leaders will also be in continuous telephone contact with Wallace staff throughout the state.
May 6, 1958-The small band of local Republicans met in convention today at the Masonic hall to select delegates for their district and state conventions. Attendees included Roma Lee Livingston, J. D. Pope, J. D. Bush, O. T. Penn, Guy Walker, J. P. Stephenson, and Onnie Penn.
May 7, 1958-Harvey Pickens told Hartselle Kiwanians tonight about some of his adventures as an oil field worker in Texas and Oklahoma some years ago. Currently Mr. Pickens works as a mailman.
