Eva students recently reached a goal of collecting and donating 1,500 cans of staple foods for needy families in their area. The canned goods were donated over a three-week period in April and placed in a local food bank.
The “Eagles Food for Families” project stems from a Learn and Serve Grant sponsored by Morgan County Schools in cooperation with the Volunteer Center of Morgan County. As part of the grant, fifth grade students and their sponsors set a goal of collecting 1,500 food items. They created and posted flyers in the community to advertise the project, collected non-perishable items from students within the school and kept a total of each day’s collection top create graphs. They started a journal to record researched information about the causes of world hunger and wrote brooks to read to lower grades about the topic.
To compete the project, students carried the food items to the local food bank where they were sorted and so stocked in shelves. The food bank distributes food to 20 to 30 families each month.
