Two strings and a hankie is not a dress

All Marche Taylor wanted to do, she said, was go to the prom. She was prevented from doing so by school officials, who stopped her from entering the dance and, after an altercation of some sort, called the police and had the Houston, Texas teen escorted away in handcuffs.
A sad story? Sure. The whole story? No way.
Taylor, who’s gone on several television shows and been featured on internet stories around the world, said school officials were being overzealous in their enforcement of the dress code. They didn’t like her prom dress, she said, and therefore prevented her from entering the dance.
But one quick glance at a photo of Taylor dressed for the prom makes you realize this story isn’t about fashion preferences. Photos of Taylor on the night of the prom show a girl wearing far less than what people wear on a Brazilian beach.
The dress is a thin, slinky gold material. The skirt is short, the type designed to show everything you’ve got and then a bit more. There’s a small ruffled train in the back. The top – if you can call it that – consists of a thin strip of cloth that wraps around her chest and ties in the back. The straps are very thin and because the material is too, there’s very little left to the imagination.
My first thought was “what was this young woman thinking?” This was quickly replaced by “What was this young woman’s mother thinking?” It seems quite a stretch that a teenager would believe such a getup would be appropriate for any public function, especially a school-related one. What boggles my mind even more, however, is why a mother would let her daughter leave the bedroom, much less the house, in such a getup.
If I had attempted such a thing in my younger years, the conversation would have gone something like this:
Taylor’s mother apparently had a much different reaction. Their conversation must have went something like this:
In spite of being arrested, Taylor said she likes her dress and doesn’t understand the fuss. What do you want to bet her mother doesn’t understand it either?
