Fundraiser planned for boy with cancer
By Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
Michelle Story Swader, a 1989 graduate of Hartselle High School who now lives in Mt. Olive, is seeking financial assistance in her struggle to provide medical care for her eight-year-old son, Alex Swader, who is suffering from cancer.
A fundraiser is planned June 1 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Steele’s Event Center on Highway 31 South, in Hartselle (old Wal-Mart building). Performers will include 4-Wheel Thrive, Hack Ward and The Good Time Band, Dennis Ballentine as Elvis and Lacey Snider. Admission at the door is a $5 donation.
Donations may also be made made to “The Alex Swader Fund” at any Wachovia or First American Bank.
Alex, an honor student and a national championship tap dancer, was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma cancer on Jan. 11. Since then, he has undergone two surgeries and is undergoing chemotherapy twice a week at University Hospital in Birmingham.
In spite of illness and weakness associated with his treatment, Alex has been able to keep up his schoolwork at home and is optimistic about a full recovery from cancer. The second grader was honorary chairman for the North Jefferson County 2008 Relay for Life cancer fundraising event. His team—Swader’s Cancer Terminators— also raised more than $5,000 for the event.
