Patriots solid in spring game

FLORETTE - Brewer wrapped up its spring football practice with a solid performance in the Patriots’ jamboree Friday against Southside High School.
Brewer allowed two touchdowns in the second half as Southside pulled off the 14-6 victory.
Brewer is coming off a 3-7 finish in the 2007 season. The Patriots will be playing in the reworked Region 6 in Class 5A this fall. Joining the Patriots in the region will be Cullman, Curry, Erwin, Hayden, Mortimer Jordan, Pleasant Grove, Springville and Walker.
The Patriots forced a Southside turnover to set up its only touchdown. Aaron Taylor wrapped up the loose football to give Brewer a first down at Southside’s 16-yard line.
Chris Dickerson scored on a fourth-and-goal play from inside the 1-yard line with 3:33 remaining in the first half.
Southside answered with a 45-yard touchdown run by Zack Elkins with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter.
Dominique Burton recovered a Southside fumble near midfield in the fourth quarter.
The Patriots drove to the Southside 15 before the drive ended on downs.
Southside drove into the red zone late in the fourth quarter and Muggsy Howard caught a short touchdown pass with 1:56 remaining.
The Panthers added the two-point conversion to increase the margin to 14-6.
Brewer moved the football to midfield late in the game before again turning the ball over on downs.
The jamboree started with the two teams playing their junior varsity players for one quarter.
Brewer’s Phillip Newby scored on a 21-yard option pitch with 8:28 remaining in the quarter for the Patriots’ only points in the junior varsity scrimmage.
Hunter Bramlett came up with an interception to end a Southside drive late in the quarter.
