June 19, 1958-Vondalyn Jones, a student at Falkville Elementary, is the winner of the Morgan County 4-H Clubs’ annual essay contest. Her paper was entitled, “Safe Driving is Practicing Good Christianity.”
June 20, 1958-The McCoy family, featuring the piano artistry and vocals of Sidney Ryan Hicks, appeared in concert at Salem Methodist Church tonight.
June 20, 1958-Local Bama football fans were interested to learn today that Bobby Luna, a standout halfback for the Tide from 1951-54 is joining new Coach Bear Bryant’s staff. Luna is best known for his stellar play on the ‘52 team that beat Syracuse in the Orange Bowl by a lopsided 61-6 score.
June 20, 1958-Hal Butler left today for Fort Benning, Ga., where he will attend ROTC camp for six weeks.
June 21, 1958-Dean Paul Garner, head of the School of Commerce and Business Administration at UA, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Leo Pettit. Mrs. Pettit is a member of the CBA faculty.
June 22, 1958-The annual all-day singing was held at Friendship Baptist Church south of Danville today. Jack Miller is chairman of this singing, which always attracts a large number of singers and listeners, every one of whom goes away greatly blessed.
June 22, 1958-Several local racing enthusiasts were in Birmingham today for the “NASCAR” 200-lap Grand National convertible race.
June 23, 1958-Tolan Whitten is now a licensed local preacher in the Methodist denomination.
June 24, 1958-The Morgan County Board of Education voted tonight to ban schools from selling soft drinks and candy prior to the kids having lunch. According to Gladys Moses, the county superintendent of instruction, it is frequently the case that students fill up on sweets and soda and then don’t eat a healthy lunch.
June 24, 1958-From today on through the rest of the summer Tuesday mornings will be reserved for ladies only at the Recreation Park swimming pool.
June 25, 1958-Local farmers are having to increase the amount of pesticides they use to deal with the boll weevil menace that wreaks havoc on cotton fields. The European corn borer is attacking late-planted corn. Both of these insects have multiplied due to unusually wet weather.
June 25, 1958-Hartselle veterinarian Dr. Kenneth Swafford is currently constructing a seven-room, two-bath home on South Sparkman Street. Prolific Hartselle builder M. M. Patterson is building yet another residence, this one a five-room home located on Short Street. Numerous other residential projects are also under way here at the present time.
