Massey resident finds joy in backyard flower garden

When Doris Herring gave up her vegetable garden several years ago little did she realize that the handful of flower seed she scattered on its soil would become a source of wonder and joy for herself as well as her friends and neighbors in the Massey community.
Herring’s garden contains a mixture of old-fashioned azaleas (purple, pink and white), marigolds (yellow and gold), Larkspur (blue), Zinnias (red, white and yellow) and Primrose (red). The entire space is a canopy of color with the exception of one small space where three squash vines are growing.
Herring is a native of Massey and has lived in the same house for 61 years. Her three sons, Larry, Theron and Ferrell Anders, and their families all live outside of Morgan County. Larry is retired and lives in Sheffield; Theron has a government job and lives in Herndon, Va.; and Ferrell is a lawyer and lives in Fairhope. She also has seven grandchildren.
She misses not having her family nearby and is looking forward to that changing in the near future. Her grandson, Zeke Anders, who lives in Virginia, recently graduated from High School ands is making plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall. He will join the Million Dollar Band as a French horn player.
