Woman pleads guilty to theft
By Staff
A former church treasurer will learn her fate Nov. 5 after pleading guilty in connection to a theft at First Church of God in Hartselle.
Wyllene Carter, 63, of Bill Hopewell Road, faces up to five years in prison in connection with the theft of $24,169 from the church. Carter led guilty last week before Circuit Judge Glenn Thompson.
She has applied for probation.
Court officials said Carter took money from the church and then attempted to pay it back with worthless checks. She had served as the church’s treasurer since 1990 until the theft was discovered in 2007.
Carter is currently free on $1,500 bail.
