Local shelter receives grant

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded a $253,738 grant to help Crisis Services of North Alabama continue serving domestic violence victims through a shelter in Morgan County.
The Huntsville-based organization operates a satellite shelter in Morgan County to give victims in Morgan and Limestone counties access to assistance closer to home. Along with emergency shelter, the organization provides a 24-hour crisis line, counseling, legal aid, court advocacy and referrals to other community resources for assistance with housing, employment and other needs. Crisis Services of North Alabama was formed in 1999 by the merger of two nonprofit groups. In 2007, the organization responded to more than 700 crisis calls and sheltered more than 450 victims at its Morgan County facility. The organization also operates a satellite shelter in Marshall County.
