July 10, 1958-A bachelor dinner was held tonight for Frank Stewart at the home of Robert Peck. Guests included John Howell, Robert Parker, Charles Quinn, Joe Howell, Edward Monroe, Bill Evans, Ted Williams, and Robert Wright.
July 11, 1958-The Hartselle National Guard, Company C, is now in the last phase of training at Fort McClellan. Company commander is Lieut. Orval D. Proctor.
July 12, 1958-Mrs. Opal C. Stewart left by plane from Birmingham today en route to California where she will spend several weeks with relatives.
July 12, 1958-Mike Roberts, an Eagle Scout with 27 merit badges to his credit, was given the Vigil honor at Camp Westmoreland today. This highly coveted award is given only to those who have demonstrated exceptional service to Scouting.
July 12, 1958-Virginia Ann Johnson and Frank Stewart were married tonight at First Methodist. The Rev. E. M. Barnes, Jr., of Florence officiated. The bride’s only attendant was her cousin, Sarah Ann Thompson. James Franklin Stewart, Jr., was his son’s best man.
July 13, 1958-Two local youths, Pat Wallace and Tommy Ed Roberts were injured in a two-car collision at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Alabama 20 just north of the Keller Bridge this afternoon. The boys were en route to Chattanooga where both are employed this summer. The brakes on the car driven by the other party failed. Tommy Ed was thrown clear of the car. Fortunately, neither boy was seriously injured
July 13, 1958-The Morgan County Singing Convention met today at New Friendship. Besides the president, Vernon Sharp, song directors included Jack Miller, Jonnie Johnson, Plumer Oden, Homer Price, Roland Oden, Linda Sharp, Don Key, Letha Jane Summerford, Peggy Long, Louie Key, Annie Jo Holmes, Grady Parker, Mrs. Clyde Key, Cullie Gibson, Paul Jones, Tennis Sparkman, W. T. Willoughby, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Summerford, Acie Hightower, Guy Walker, and Malcolm Stephenson. Paul Jones will be the new convention president; Jack Miller, vice-president; Plumer Oden, secretary-treasurer; chaplain, Fred Summerford; and pianist, Linda Sharp.
July 14, 1958-Foreign news dominated today’s local headlines. Iraq is currently in the midst of a violent revolution that threatens peace not only in the Middle East but worldwide. Iraq’s pro-western king, Faisal, has been deposed. Turmoil is also expected in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and a disruption of the U.S. oil supply is a distinct possibility
July 15, 1958-Mr. and Mrs. Comer Tankersley are currently vacationing at Daytona Beach.
July 16, 1958-Richard Wallace began teaching a singing school at Cedar Creek Free Will Baptist Church tonight.
