Awning work to begin soon

After more than three years of waiting, work on the first phase replacement of the sidewalk awnings in downtown Hartselle will begin in two weeks.
Johnson said the awnings in the block extending east and west between Railroad and Sparkman Streets would be torn down and replaced on one side of the street at a time. “The state Highway Department will place signage to indicate a construction area and workers will confine their activity so that no more than three or four parking spaces will be out of use at any one time. This should lessen the impact the project has on store owners and their customers.”
The contractor has until Nov. 30 to complete the project, which includes the replacement of sidewalks in need of repair as well as street cutouts for landscaping.
Johnson said arrangements have been made to clean up the construction area and cease activity during the Depot Days Celebration and Christmas Open House.
While only one block of the downtown area is included in the first phase, plans are in the making to follow as quickly as possible with phase two allowing for the replacement of awnings from Sparkman to Cedar Street.
