July 24, 1958-A. T. Abercrombie has been named principal of the new elementary school currently under construction on the eastside of town. The school is as yet unnamed and citizens are invited to suggest an appropriate designation for Hartselle’s newest educational facility. Presently Mr. Abercrombie teaches science and social science at MCHS. In his new position he will instruct sixth grade students. Other teachers are Sue Prince, Ruby Vest, Mrs. Charles Pickens, and Opal Cross Stewart.
July 24, 1958-Mr. and Mrs. Burl Hardwick and daughter, Sandra, are vacationing at Gulf Shores this week.
July 24, 1958 – Subscriptions to the Riddle, the MCHS school newspaper, are now on sale for $1.50. Barbara Young is the editor.
July 24, 1958-Jean Young has purchased Ruby Craft’s beauty salon.
July 25, 1958-Teenagers are partying at the Hartselle pool on Friday nights. The opportunity to swim, dance, and play tennis costs only 25 cents for students and 35 cents for graduates.
July 25, 1958-W. T. Stewart, Sr., suffered a dizzy spell today and was immediately taken to Block-Chandler Hospital.
July 26, 1958-Max Merrill and Charter Nicholson, both UA students, are spending the weekend with homefolks.
July 26, 1958—Guy Rutledge has received his honorable discharge from the Air Force after two years of exemplary service. Guy was most recently stationed on Okinawa and in Korea.
July 27, 1958-Hartselle Presbyterians marked their first anniversary as an organized congregation today.
July 27, 1958-West Hartselle Baptist Church observed the ordinances of the Lord’s Supper and baptism in the preaching service today. Rev. John Ingouf is the church pastor.
July 28, 1958-The first state clinic for the treatment of alcoholics opened in Birmingham this morning. Even though Hartselle and Morgan County are legally dry, alcohol abuse is a very serious public health problem. Most local arrests are accounted for by public drunkenness.
July 28, 1958-Charley Beene, local Liberty National manager, is attending an advanced life insurance seminar in Birmingham this week.
July 29, 1958-Members are reminded that the MCHS band is practicing this morning at 8 and every Tuesday morning thereafter. Hollis James is the director of the band.
July 30, 1958-City Attorney Merrill Doss is currently researching the question of whether kids can ride their bikes on the sidewalks, just so long as they don’t do it in the downtown area.
