Brewer's Crawley scores six in all-star win

HUNTSVILLE - Morgan Crawley spent much of the second half of the Alabama All-Star Sports Week basketball game trying to get open.
And even though she only got five shots in her 10 minutes of play in the North’s 86-45 victory over the South at Spragins Hall on the University of Alabama at Huntsville campus, Crawley certainly represented Brewer High School well.
The Lady Patriots’ senior-to-be finished with six points after hitting two of five field goal attempts. She also had two steals and three rebounds.
The North’s Kellie Cook paced the win with 15 points after scoring the first seven points of the game with two buckets and a 3-pointer.
Cook, a standout at Bob Jones, was named the North’s most valuable player after the win - the same honor she received in the Final Four in March in Birmingham.
Danielle Johnson of Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa added 14 points, while Adrienne Webb of Sparkman and Talladega’s Jessica Merritt finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The North, who now leads the series 10-2, jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first quarter and coasted to the victory.
The South players struggled from the field in the game, hitting just seven of their 28 field goal attempts in the first half.
Sparkman’s Danielle Vaughn had eight rebounds for the North, while Jala Harris of Bob Jones finished with four assists.
Crawley scored her first points of the game with 28 seconds remaining in the second half on an offensive rebound to give the North a 45-17 advantage.
Crawley added her final points of the game late in the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws and a bucket in the final minute of play.
Cook gave the North team an early spark after she scored the game’s first seven points.
