Aug. 21, 1958-The Hartselle library presented A film with the title, “Meaningful Visitation to the Aged,” this afternoon. As the program is developed, volunteers will visit the homes of participating older citizens and either read to them or bring large-print books dealing with subjects they’re interested in.
Aug. 21, 1958-Many Hartselle rural area residents were in Decatur today for the annual Joe Wheeler coop meeting. Governor-elect John Patterson was the featured speaker.
Aug. 21, 1958-The Alabama Public Service Commission has told Stanford Taxi that it can’t establish a new Hartselle-Decatur bus route. The state regulatory agency said that Rodgers and Rodgers was already providing enough service with 24 scheduled trips between the two cities (including Greyhound).
Aug. 21, 1958-An essay by Coach J. P. Cain appeared in today’s Enquirer. The subject was “To Play or Not to Play Football-Will Son’s Grades Suffer?”
Aug. 22, 1958-Morgan County native Dean Jones appears in his first starring role, “Handle with Care,” which is currently showing at the Strand.
Aug. 22, 1958-The Morgan County dairy cattle show was held at the Stewart and Bennett gin on West Main today. Hartselle area winners included Carolyn and Wanda Pettit and Leo Orr. The program was put together by local veterinarian Dr. Kenneth L. Swafford and County Agent Charles Rutledge.
Aug. 23, 1958-MCHS has three new teachers, according to an announcement made by County Education Superintendent Lester Wooten today.
They are Alice Jean Glasgow, librarian; Dorothy Myers, math; and Herman Myers, coach.
Aug. 24, 1958-Mrs. Nell Sherrill received her MA degree in general education during summer commencement exercises at Peabody College in Nashville. Mrs. Sherrill had previously received the BS from Florence State and teaches first grade at Hartselle Elementary.
Aug. 25, 1958-Showing how they have their work cut out for them if they seek to do mission work in post-revolutionary Iraq, recently surveys show that only 3 percent of the population profess the Christian faith. This is the smallest percentage of any country in the Middle East.
Aug. 26, 1958-The Alabama State Highway Department has authorized the building of a bridge spanning Flint Creek on Vaughn Bridge Road. Also, a little over six miles of this road will be paved simultaneous with the building of the bridge. The new bridge takes the place of an old one previously condemned as unsafe.
Aug. 27, 1958-John Reynolds (who would later serve as mayor of Hartselle) is enjoying a great deal of success as manager of Elmore’s 5 &10, a position he has had for the past six months.
