Funeral for John J. Sumerel III, 48, of Decatur was Monday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tommy Bolan officiating.
Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Sumerel died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, in Decatur. He was born July 18, 1960, in Chicago, Ill. to John J. Sumerel Jr. and Betty Foster Sumerel. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carla Mitchell.
A graduate of Austin High School and Troy University, he was president of the Austin High School Alumni Foundation. He was a past president of Fort Walton, Fla., Jaycees and owner and operator of Retirement Planning Solutions and the The Sumerel Agency in Decatur. His lifetime awards and recognitions include the following: Outstanding Fundraising Chairman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Florida from 1987 to 1995, Leadership graduate Ft. Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, past president of Ft Walton Beach Jaycees, Executive Board Member of the Year, Director of the Year and Jaycee of the Year for Ft. Walton Beach Jaycees. He also was a manager and coach in the Decatur Dixie Youth Baseball League from 1996 to 2004.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly Anne Sumerel of Decatur; two sons, John J. (J.J.) Sumerel IV and Christopher “Brett” Sumerel, both of Decatur; two stepdaughters, Kiralee Anne Hubbard of Indiana and Heather Elizabeth Flack of Florida; his parents, John and Betty Sumerel of Decatur; a brother, Robert Sumerel of Winfield; a sister, Patricia Young of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Worley, Steve Manthey, Charles Richard, Donnie Miller, Rick Burrough and Mike Griggs.
