Aug. 28, 1958-Reserved seat tickets for MCHS home football games went on sale today. The price is $5 for five games.
Aug. 29, 1958-The Morgan County Board of Education is not ready yet to name a principal for the new west Hartselle elementary school. This may done at the next meeting. At the invitation of the board several possible names for the new school have been suggested, including West Hartselle, Crestview, and Kyle. Mrs. Ruth Huie, first grade teacher at Hartselle Elementary School, has been assigned to teach the same grade at the new school.
Aug. 30, 1958-According to a progress survey made by Rev. W. P. Maxwell and reported to the Enquirer, during the past three years 107 homes have been constructed,. Orville Tanner plans to build 100 homes in a new subdivision that will be known as Tanner Heights. In the health field, one new hospital has been built while the other has been enlarged on three occasions. Also two manufacturing plants have expanded the scope of their operations. In public facilities, Hartselle now has both a new municipal building and a new elementary school.
Aug. 31, 1958-Ab Masterson celebrated his 93rd birthday today. He says he hasn’t seen a doctor since he was in his 20s. He was born the year the Civil War ended, 1865.
Aug. 31, 1958-The swimming pool closed today, ending what pool manager J. P. Cain called a “poor season.” The main contributing factors were too much rain, cool evening temperatures, and a general lack of public interest.
Sept. 1, 1958-In observance of Labor Day both of Hartselle’s new car dealerships, Stewart Bros. and Nicholson Motors, were closed in order to give their dedicated employee a well-deserved day off.
Sept. 1, 1958-Effective today, if you want to get your car washed at a Hartselle service station, it will set you back $1.50. A grease job will cost $1.25. Oil changes will cost $1.50 if the vehicle takes five quarts. Flats will be fixed for a dollar.
Sept. 1, 1958-Milk won’t go up a penny a quart today as producers had hoped. The state milk board, strongly led by Ag Commissioner A. W. Todd,voted to keep the price the same, 25 cents per quart.
Sept. 1, 1958-Crimson Tide fall football practice began today in Tuscaloosa under the direction of new head Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant. At the outset there will be both morning and afternoon practice sessions.
Sept. 1, 1958-Picked to win the SEC football title a second consecutive year, the Auburn Tigers started practicing for the ‘58 campaign today. Top players undoubtedly will include Jerry Wilson, Jackie Burkett, Zeke Smith, Lloyd Nix, and Tommy Lorino. Lorino set a new SEC record as a sophomore in yards gained per carry.
Sept. 2, 1958-All Morgan county schools opened today. As previously announced there will be no “cotton picking vacation” this year in the rural areas. The first day is only a half-session with the regular schedule beginning tomorrow. Hartselle schools will operate on standard time immediately while schools elsewhere in the county will continue on DST until Sept. 27.
Sept. 3, 1958-Friendship week is in progress at MCHS. It began with “hey day” during which all students wore nametags.
