FLORETTE - Brewer’s varsity Patriots engineered a strong comeback with the help of a backup quarterback before losing 14-7 to the Albertville Aggies in two 12-minute periods of competition at James R. Tucker Stadium Friday night.
Freshmen and junior varsity teams also competed in a 10-minute period each. The Patriots split in those contests, with the junior varsity team winning 12-0 and the freshmen losing 8-6.
In a worst case scenario, Brewer’s varsity allowed touchdowns on back to-back Albertville possessions and trailed 0-14 going into the second period. The Aggies grabbed a 7-0 advantage on their second possession when they scored on an 82-yard pass play and converted the extra point with 4:11 left in the first period. Then, they marched 70 yards in 10 plays and scored another touchdown and extra point with 1:08 left in the same period.
In the meantime, the Patriots were unable to get their offense going. They were limited to 22 yards rushing and eight yards passing and picked up two penalties. To make matters worse, Tony Dickerson was hit while throwing on the next to last play in the first period and had to leave the game with a knee injury.
Despite the loss of their starting quarterback, the Patriots turned their misfortune into a best case scenario in the second period. With backup quarterback Tyler Parker under center, they marched 74 yards in nine plays and capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Parker to Matt Pinkerton. Vinney Muggeo booted the extra point to make the score 14-7.
Parker sparked the drive by completing six of seven passes for 58 yards.
Defensively, the Patriots limited the visitors to 36 yards of offense in the second period and didn’t allow a pass completion in three attempts.
The Patriots will take on Madison Academy Friday at 7 p.m. in the season opener at home.
