Sept. 4, 1958-”What Value is Football?” was the title of the last in a series of essays published in the Enquirer over the past several weeks, each written by Coach J. P. Cain.
Sept. 4, 1958-Bobby Cain demonstrated his trumpet and vocal artistry for members of the Kiwanis Club at this week’s regular meeting
Sept. 4, 1958-Three more Alabama letterman have left the Tide team, Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant announced tonight. The coach is known as a tough disciplinarian and it is not unusual for players who don’t live up to his expectations to leave the squad.
Sept. 5, 1958-Two-year-old Jimmy Martin celebrated his birthday this afternoon when his mother, Mrs. J. S. Martin, entertained several of his friends in his honor. Guests included Roger Chapman, Randall Sittason, Kay Stoner, Charlsa Taul, Betty Wear Martin, and Susan Martin.
Sept. 5, 1958-Martha Lynn Roberts left today to attend a leadership meeting at Grandview Camp. Martha Lynn, a student at Huntingdon College, will serve on the freshman orientation committee this year.

Francis, a student in the engineering school, was on the dean’s list for the summer quarter at API.
Sept. 6, 1958-Assistant Hartselle Coach Brub Hamilton has been elected vice-president of the Tennessee Valley Conference. J. C. Pettey serves on the conference board.
Sept. 7, 1958-Only two defendants were brought before municipal court this week, both on account of public drunkenness.
Sept. 7, 1958-Per capita income in Morgan County is now, according to the latest available statistics, $1,185. Twenty years ago it was $263. Morgan County population is not growing, however. The latest count shows 50,729. A slight drop was noted during the past couple of years.
Sept. 8, 1958-There was a collision of a school bus with another vehicle at Ryan’s Cross Roads this morning. Fortunately none of the children on board the bus was injured and the two passengers in the ‘55 Ford were hurt only slightly.
Sept. 8, 1958-Earl Payne is building a new home at Wheeler Place. R. C. Yarbrough has a similar project underway on Woodland Drive. Paul Weinman is building a new home on Airport Road.
Sept. 9, 1958-The new athletic boosters club elected officers at its meeting tonight. They are as follows: Charlie Beene, president; Dr. Bob Sittason, vice president; Mrs. Bill Lindsey, secretary; and Horace Broom, treasurer.
Sept. 9, 1958-Auburn Coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan was not pleased with today’s practice session. He was quoted in the paper as saying that, “If we are to defend our national defense championship, I can only say we are off to a pitiful start.”
Sept. 10, 1958-Head football coach J.P. Cain and head basketball Coach Herman Myers spoke to both the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs this week.
Sept. 10, 1958-The needy aged will get pension checks seven dollars higher in October than they got this month. The statewide average for these checks will be about $45, as opposed to the current figure of $38.
Sept. 10, 1958-Free Wednesday parking in downtown Hartselle ended today.
