Sept. 18, 1958—Bobby Ray Hicks, a MCHS graduate and now a student at the University of Alabama, lost a wardrobe worth more than $300 while en route to Canada via New York City. His car had been parked in a supposedly “nice” section of Gotham at the time the theft occurred. Hicks lost three suits, a tuxedo, 15 shirts, and seven pair of trousers.
Sept. 18, 1958-Morgan County schools have enrolled 7,001 students thus far this year. The new elementary school in west Hartselle currently has 207 students while the older 1-6 school has 610. MCHS has 650 students enrolled in grades 7-12. MCTS has 300.
Sept. 19, 1958-Lt. and Mrs. Harold McClanahan are now back in Hartselle after spending a three and one-half year tour of duty with the Air Force in Europe.
Sept. 19, 1958-A-2c Kenneth W. Blankenship, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blankenship, Hartselle 1, is currently attached to the dental branch of the Mitchell AFB hospital in New York. He was recently at home on furlough.
Sept. 20, 1958-Jack B. Long has been honorably discharged as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. Upon his leaving the service he was
awarded a certificate of merit for excellence in performing his assigned duties.
Sept. 20, 1958-Garland Rollins is beginning a $60,000 expansion to his Falkville Nursing Home.
Sept. 20, 1958-Formerly, Hartselle’s most noted physician, Dr. Claude Lavender, is now practicing in Decatur, taking over a clinic formerly operated by the late Dr. A. M. Roan. Dr. Lavender founded Hartselle Hospital, but moved to Houston three years ago. In Houston he took courses in urology which fully qualify him to now begin a practice in that specialty.
Sept. 21, 1958-There was a two-car collision on Round Top road, four miles west of Falkville, this morning. The wreck, which occurred at an intersection, resulted in injuries to the driver of a 1956 Chevrolet, Fred V. Summerford, 43, a resident of Falkville 2. The driver of the other car, a 1953 Chevrolet, was Johnny Mack Bramlett, 16, also of Falkville 2, who was unhurt.
Sept. 21, 1958-The Fall quarter began at API (Auburn) today. With many Hartselle area students among them, the school is anticipating an enrollment of about 8,400.
Sept. 22, 1958—Older voters who strongly supported his candidacy are waiting to see how incoming Governor John Patterson plans to keep his campaign promise to raise pensions to $75 per month.
Sept. 23, 1958-Col. Lewis C. Pattillo has been promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army.
Sept. 23, 1958-The Hartselle city council voted to place street signs at intersections. This topic has been debated for several years and will meet with much satisfaction by residents and non-residents alike.
Sept. 23, 1958-Auburn is ranked third in this week’s AP football poll. Ohio State and Oklahoma are first and second, respectively.
Sept. 24, 1958-The city is in the process of purchasing 30 new parking meters to replace old ones no longer functional.
Sept. 24, 1958-Morgan County Tax Collector Price Bryant was well enough to go home from Decatur General today.
