Grant aimed at preventing violence

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded a $116,301 grant to support an organization that provides support to domestic violence victims in Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Morgan Counties.
The grant will help Crisis Services of North Alabama continue assisting victims and their children through its HOPE Place program.
Assistance available through Hope Place includes emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, individual and group counseling and legal aid. The services are provided at the organization’s main facility in Madison County and satellite shelter in Morgan County.
In 2007, HOPE Place responded to 5,429 crisis calls and provided shelter for 299 women and children.
Since opening in 1983, the organization has sheltered more than 11,000 victims.
Riley awarded the grant from funds made available to Alabama by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the award.
Riley notified Twana Lee, president of the organization’s board, that the grant had been approved.
Matching funds of $29,075 will supplement the award.
