Tying a school record for most points in a game, the Danville Hawks cruised to an easy 62-12 home win over the Carbon Hill Bulldogs in a Class 3A, Region 7 game last Friday night.
Danville scored on nine of its 12 possessions to even its record at 2-2 overall but, more importantly, 2-1 in the region.
Junior running back Levi George got the scoring started for the Hawks, going 74 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game.
Parker Hogan, who would finish the game 8-of-9 on PATs, kicked the extra point to give Danville a 7-0 lead with 10:39 left in the opening period.
Danville’s special teams set up the next score for the Hawks as Clint McAbee returned a Carbon Hill punt 57 yards to give Danville a first -and-goal at the Bulldog 9. On the Hawks first play of the drive, David Cortez took a handoff from Tyler Beck and ran 9 yards for the touchdown. Hogan kicked the extra point and Danville led 14-0 midway through the period.
In the second quarter Danville would add two more touchdowns on runs of 21 and 2 yards by George and Beck respectively to take a 28-0 lead at the half.
George’s run capped a 4-play, 43-yard drive which was set up by a Jesse Posey interception. Posey’s pick was one of four by the Danville defense.
Carbon Hill was finally able to get some offense going on its final possession of the half, driving from its 32 to the Danville 13 before Hawk senior Schuyler Forman ended the scoring threat by picking off a Bulldog pass.
Danville, as it did to open the game, wasted little time getting on the board in the second half going 40 yards in just two plays to take a 35-0 lead on George’s 45-yard run down the left sideline.
Carbon Hill got on the board on their next drive on a 37-yard pass from Hudson to Henderson. The extra point failed and Danville led 35-6 with 7:10 left in the third.
Danville was forced to punt on its next possession giving the Bulldogs the football at their own 34. Carbon Hill was able to move the ball into Hawk territory but the defense once again came up with a big play as Forman picked off his second pass of the night.
Taking over at its own 31, the Hawks moved quickly into the Bulldog end zone. On Danville’s second play of the drive, Beck, after completing a 17-yard pass to McAbee on the previous play, ran 52 yards for the touchdown. Hogan added the PAT to give Danville a 42-6 lead late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Danville continue its domination of the Bulldogs outscoring Carbon Hill 20-6 to make the final score 62-12 in favor of the Hawks.
Danville’s touchdowns came on runs of 5 and 24 yards by sophomore quarterback Thomas Russell and Hawk freshman Jordon Orr finished the scoring for Danville by running 48 yards for the score.
In the statistical department, Danville rushed for a season-high 425 yards. George led all Hawk runners with 162 yards on just 10 carries. George ran the ball just one time in the second half. Orr also broke the 100-yard barrier as he gained 117 yards in eight carries. Orr had 108 of his yards in the final period.
Danville will take a break from region play tomorrow night as they entertain county rival Priceville. Kickoff at Smith-Owens Stadium will be at 7 p.m.
