State jobless rate drops to 4.9 percent

Unemployment in Alabama declined to 4.9 percent in August, compared to 5.1 percent in July. The state’s jobless rate in August 2007 was 3.6 percent.
The national unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent in August, compared to 5.7 percent in July.
Job gains were seen in the government, professional and business services and construction. Job losses were seen in manufacturing.
