Winston County remains unbeaten with win over Devils

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Falkville hit the road Friday seeking to hand Winston County its first loss of the season, but the Yellow Jackets had other plans.
Winston County scored twice in the first half and held off Falkville for a 22-13 victory to improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in region play. Falkville fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Falkville received the opening kickoff and set up at their own 20 yard line.The Devils were unable to gain a first down, and a shanked punt set the Yellow Jackets up at the Falkville 35. They scored on their first play from scrimmage with a pass from Justin South to Jaice Hampton. Jordan Currington’s kick made it 6-0, Winston County.
Falkville went three-and-out on its next drive and punted back to the Yellow Jackets.
Falkville’s Aaron Lee came up with an interception to end a Winston County drive.
After holding Falkville without a first down, the Yellow Jackets drove 50 yards to add to their lead. The five-play possession was capped by a 7-yard run from Josh Kelly.
Winston County failed on the conversion attempt, holding on to a 12-0 lead.
Winston County added a field goal from Jordan Currington to stretch the lead to 15-0.
Falkville’s next drive covered 52 yards but was snuffed out by a fumble on the Winston County 16-yard line.
The Blue Devils quickly got the ball back with a fumble recovery and Dustin Jump got Falkville on the scoreboard with a 2-yard touchdown run.
Aaron Lee’s extra point trimmed the margin to 15-7.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with a solid drive starting at their own 37, but were stopped with a sack by Lee.
On fourth-and-31, the Blue Devils’ Jonathan McNatt blocked a punt and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to trim the Winston County lead to 15-13.
Winston County scored on its next drive, finishing with a 4-yard touchdown run by Josh Johnson to take a 22-13 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Falkville recovered another Winston County fumble in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils were unable to come away with any points.
