Falkville holds off Vinemont

VINEMONT - Trevor Mayer scored two touchdowns and Falkville’s defense came up with a big interception in the final minute to claim a 16-14 victory over Vinemont Friday night.
The win was the first for Falkville over the Eagles in eight tries. In the last 20 meetings between the two schools, the Blue Devils have won just six times.
Falkville improved to 3-2 overall with the win that ended the Blue Devils’ two-game losing string. Falkville had lost two straight since opening the season 2-0 after beating Priceville and Addison.
The Blue Devils' defense limited Vinemont to just 14 points, the fourth time this season that the team has held opponents to just two touchdowns or less. Falkville has allowed just seven touchdowns in five games.
Falkville scored just 90 seconds into the game when Jonathan McNatt teamed up with Mayer on a 51-yard touchdown pass to take an early lead.
Vinemont tied the game in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Cody Harris to Reno Jones.
Falkville drove deep into Vinemont territory just before the half, but the Blue Devils settled for a 22-yard field goal from Aaron Lee to take a 10-7 advantage into the break.
Vinemont went in front with Todd Schiel's 60-yard return of an interception with 6:39 left in the third quarter.
Mayer’s second touchdown of the night came on a pass with 1:42 left in the third quarter – part of a 65-yard drive - gave the Blue Devils a 16-14 lead. The 27-yard touchdown pass was the second of the game for McNatt.
Vinemont got the ball back late in the game, but Falkville came up with a key interception to end the game.
Falkville will host Lamar County Friday in a key region game. The Blue Devils are currently 1-2 in region play.
