HJHS students push annual magazine drive
By By Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
Hartselle Junior High School students are now soliciting new and renewal magazine subscriptions from their friends, relatives and neighbors in support of their school’s annual fundraiser. Of gross sales, 40 percent is retained by the school and used to purchase classroom equipment and supplies not covered in the general operating budget.
The fundraiser began earlier this month and will continue through Oct. 8.
Featured in the fundraiser catalog are more than 700 popular magazine titles. They include Readers Digest, National Geographic, Better Homes and Gardens, Sports Illustrated and Entertainment Weekly, as well as a wide selection of books and music CD’s. Many of the magazines are offering special offers and discounted rate for subscribers.
Students are eligible to receive up to 12 different prizes based on the number of subscription they sell. For example. a student who sells 15 subscriptions will receive a Zeebeez, ultimate telephone excuse machine, a TV Jammer, a Handheld Mini Blender and will be chauffeured by a Hummer limo to Pizza Hut for lunch.
The school is also offering prizes. Any grade (sixth, seventh or eighth) that sells its goal of $10,000 will be awarded a picnic at Sparkman Park in the spring. If all three grades make goal, they will share in a picnic as well as get to see Principal Don Pouncey parade around in the cafeteria dressed like a woman on Halloween Day.
Out of a concern for their safety, students are asked not to sell door-to-door. Instead they are encouraged to ask their relatives and close friends to buy through personal contacts, emails and text messages. Parents are also encouraged to help by giving their business associates and co-workers an opportunity to participate. Distant friends and relatives may participate by logging onto www.QSP,com and shopping from QSP’s Internet gift catalog. Simply click on “I Want to Support My School” and following the registration process.
All such sales made during the fundraiser are credited to the school.
Last year, profit from the fundraiser totaled between $9,000 and $10,000.
