Walker spoils Brewer festivities

FLORETTE – Brewer’s Patriots scored twice in the final four minutes of the game but that didn’t keep them from losing their fifth game in a row to the Walker County Vikings, 43-14, as part of the school’s homecoming celebration Friday night.
On a brighter note, senior Alex Bowling was crowned homecoming queen during an impressive pre-game ceremony and the Patriot band received a standing ovation for its precision-paced and dramatic halftime performance.
The loss dropped the Patriots to 0-5 on the season while Walker improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in region play.
The Patriots showed some defensive toughness in the first half as they stopped the visitors on their first possession and didn’t allow a score until the final play of the first period. They trailed only by six points with four minutes left in the half. The Patriots also started strong on offense. They marched 65 yards in14 plays on their second possession and had the ball on Walker’s 4-yard line before losing it on a fumble in the end zone.
The Vikings led 22-0 at halftime and 29-0 after three periods.
The Vikings scored five of their seven touchdowns on pass plays with three quarterbacks combining for 321 yards in the air on 11 completions. They also netted 225 rushing yards.
The Patriots scored their first touchdown on a 45-yard run by Tyreik Wilson with 3:51 left in the game. Josh David booted the extra point to make the score 43-7.
Brewer scored again with 1:27 left on a 7-yard run by Philip Newby. David added the extra point to cut Walker’s lead to 43-14.
Tyler Parker stepped up as starting quarterback after senior Tony Dickerson suffered a concussion in the previous game and was lost for the season. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 122 yards.
The Patriots will meet Springville in a region game on the road Friday at 7 p.m.
