Oct. 2, 1958-The Starlight Garden Club met tonight in the home of Mrs. Ernest Greer. Mrs. Opal C. Stewart is the club president.
Oct. 2, 1958-This week a gentleman from California came to the Enquirer office searching for a farm he left about 60 years ago. Warren Miller of San Francisco moved from here in 1900 and this week was back looking for his birthplace. Mr. Miller’s father was a Union soldier from Pennsylvania.
Oct. 2, 1958-Charlie Beene is heading up the movement to launch a Hartselle Athletic Booster Club. The first meeting will be held a week from tonight.
Oct. 3, 1958-An open house was held tonight at the new In Style Shop in its newly decorated building. Mrs. Elizabeth Roberts manages the store.
Oct. 3, 1958-Farmers are reminded that the federal child labor law prohibits the employment of children during the hours when school is in session.
Oct. 3, 1958-Going steady continues to be the mad fad among teenagers. The latest trend is to wear matching sweaters, brightly colored shoelaces, or other tokens of esteem.
Oct. 4, 1958-With football season in full swing the MCHS newspaper urges students to refrain from booing or razzing the officials. They should also stay quiet while the opponents’ cheerleaders are leading a cheer and while the opponents are trying for the extra point. Other admonitions include strictly avoiding profane language, abiding by the referee’s decisions (rather than criticizing them), and speaking well of the losing team.
Oct. 4, 1958-The Fair Store chain has leased the old John Roberts retail location.
Oct. 4, 1958-A Tennessee Valley State Trade School auxiliary has been formed. Mrs. H. M. Betterton and Mrs. Howard Burleson, whose husbands are instructors at the school, are taking leading roles in this organization.
Oct. 5, 1958-The All States Caf/ is currently offering a special Sunday dinner. At a price of 75 cents, a menu of roast young hen with celery dressing and a choice of three vegetable plus salad are offered those wanting to eat out after church.
Oct. 5, 1958-Mrs. J. P. Dunaway suffered a severe heart attack this morning.
Oct. 5, 1958-An open house was held at the new west elementary school this afternoon. A. T. Abercrombie, school president, and Mrs. Van Glasscock, president of the PTA received guests.
Oct. 6, 1958-Tommy Ed Roberts, MCHS athlete who underwent knee surgery in a Birmingham hospital two weeks ago, was able to return to school today although his leg is still in a cast.
Oct. 2, 1958-Ruth Gayle Cost, now enrolled as a junior in the University of Alabama nursing school, has received a Florence Nightingale scholarship.
Oct. 7, 1958-Robert Stephenson is the newly elected president of the Hartselle Kiwanis Club. Scott stone is the vice-president.
Oct. 7, 1958-The YWA’s of First Baptist Church met tonight in the home of their new counselor, Mrs. M. H. Broom.
Oct. 8, 1958-The “M” Club of MCHS met this afternoon. Officers chosen are Tommy Ed Roberts, president; Jerry Atkins, vice-president; and Joel Ward, secretary-treasurer.
