Oct. 16, 1958-New 1959 Chevys were on display today for the first time at Stewart Brothers. According to GM, the new cars represent the “most unusual line” ever, having been dramatically restyled and boasting an array of innovative mechanical improvements.
Oct. 16, 1958-Flying buckshot was the cause of a hunting accident this afternoon. Somerville teenager Sherrill Beavers is recovering from his injuries at Decatur General.
Oct. 17, 1958-Huntsville defeated the visiting MCHS Tigers tonight by the decisive margin of 40-6. MCHS led briefly when Buddy Roberts recovered a Huntsville fumble on the 13 yard-line.
A couple of plays later Bob Harris took the ball into the end zone for the Tigers’ one and only TD.
Jim Speegle’s PAT kick was blocked. From this point on the Panthers dominated the game in a most convincing way.
Oct. 18, 1958-A few of the most loyal Crimson Tide fans made the long trip to Knoxville for this afternoon’s Bama-Tennessee game. Unfortunately, the home team won the game by the score of 14-7. The Tide is definitely on the rebound under new head Coach Bear Bryant, however. Quarterback Bobby Jackson’s fourth quarter TD was the first time in three years that the Vols had allowed a Bama man to cross their goal line.
Oct. 18, 1958-Martha Lynn Roberts, a student at Huntingdon College, is spending the weekend here with homefolks.
Oct. 19, 1958-Walden’s Chapel church hosted today’s quarterly Morgan County Singing Convention. Directors of songs included Fred Summerford, Cullie Gibson, Bev Howell, Leon Beck, Tennis Sparkman, Vernon Sharp, Louie Key, Grady Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown, Shorty Long, Peggy Long, Hershel Brown, Coleman Holmes, Herbert McElroy, Ray Griggs, Arthur Lee, and Doyle Walker. The next session of the convention will be on January 11 at Shiloh Baptist Church.
Oct. 19, 1958-A Hartselle man is in good condition tonight, despite his suicide attempt this morning. A neighbor called the police after he heard a gunshot in the vicinity of the service station the man operates.
When officers entered the building they found the man lying on the floor smoking a cigarette. The bullet entered the left part of his chest and, deflected by a rib, traversed around the side of the rib cage. No internal organs were injured. The man had made a similar suicide attempt a few weeks back but his pistol failed to fire.
Oct. 20, 1958-Harold Orr, PR director at Wolverine Tube, spoke to the Hartselle Civitan Club tonight.
Oct. 20, 1958-The PTA of the new elementary school has requested that its name be changed from West Hartselle to Crestview or Crestline Heights School. This recommendation was made in a resolution passed in tonight’s meeting.
Oct. 20, 1958-Today is the kickoff for this year’s big United Fund campaign. The goal is to raise $123,000. Robert Street is the Hartselle chairman.
Oct. 21, 1958-Auburn, which had ranked second last week, now ranks fifth in the AP college football poll. This was a result of a tie with Georgia Tech in Saturday’s game.
Oct. 22, 1958-Elvis Presley in “King Creole” is currently showing at the Strand. The Ranch has “Desire under the Elms” with Sophia Loren and Tony Perkins.
