Hartselle, Danville one step from state

Seventh-ranked Southside-Gadsden beat Hartselle in five games to upset the No. 4 Lady Tigers in the Class 5A, Region C tournament at Elkmont Saturday.
Southside, who went on to win the regional with an easy win over Muscle Shoals, beat Hartselle 25-23, 21-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the second round.
Hartselle will face unranked Springville on the road Thursday with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight tournament next week in Pelham.
Cory Livingston had 38 kills, 50 digs, eight aces and three blocks in the tourney.
Mallory Jones finished with 30 kills, nine digs, two aces and four blocks, while Cerra Little had 117 assists, 40 digs, nine aces, four blocks and six kills.
The Lady Tigers also got 28 kills, 28 digs and three blocks from Olivia Golden and 25 kills, three digs and four aces from Alex Holmes. Callie Miller added 42 digs and Chelsea Bennich had 35 digs.
Hartselle beat Arab in three games in the opening round 25-11, 25-14, 25-18.
The Lady Tigers beat East Limestone 25-20, 25-19, 25-18 to finish third.
Danville wins regional
The Danville Lady Hawks beat Pleasant Valley in the Class 3A, Region C championship Saturday 19-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 to advance to sub-state play.
No. 9 Danville will play at home Thursday against sixth-ranked Holly Pond. The winner will advance to the Elite Eight tournament in Pelham next week.
The Lady Hawks opened the region tournament at Good Hope High School with wins over Walter Wellborn 32-34, 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 and Piedmont 25-14, 24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12.
Jordan Spinks was the tournament’s most valuable player after recording 65 kills, four blocks and seven aces.
Lacey Evans, Lindsay Simmons, Chelsea Keenum and Kirby Wallace were also named to the all-tournament team.
Evans had 33 digs, while Simmons added three blocks. Keenum had four aces and Morgan Doherty added 28 digs for Danville.
