Late FG caps Brewer win
By By Staff reports, Hartselle Enquirer
CURRY - A late drive and a clutch field goal as time expired hardly sounds like a team that came into its week eight game without a win.
But it was all Brewer in the final seconds of a 10-9 victory over Curry that culminated in a 19-yard field goal from Josh David on the road Friday night.
The field goal was the first of the season for David, who was injured earlier in the season and has had just a couple of field goal attempts.
The win ended a string of 13 consecutive losses dating back to last season.
Brewer drove the length of the field with just over two minutes remaining to set up David’s game-winner.
But the Patriots needed to overcome a pair of penalties and three critical third down plays to get into position for David’s kick.
The victory was the first for the Patriots since a 14-7 win over Hayden in September last year.
The Patriots converted on three third-down situations in the drive and got a key reception from Philip Newby that put the ball at the 2-yard line with four seconds remaining.
Curry took an early lead after settling for a 40-yard field goal from Gerald Uvalle on the Yellow Jackets’ first possession of the game.
The Patriots answered with a touchdown in the first quarter from Newby, who finished with 149 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Curry took advantage of a special teams miscue in the fourth quarter and picked up a 1-yard touchdown on a keeper by Payton McGinnis that gave the Yellow Jackets a 9-7 advantage.
Newby picked up 25 yards on a run to get the Patriots to midfield on the game-winning drive and Tyriek Wilson followed with a 41-yard gain to put the Patriots in scoring territory.
After Newby’s reception on a pass from Tyler Parker put the Patriots at the 2, Brewer spiked the ball to stop the clock and set up David’s kick.
Brewer’s offense has started to post some solid numbers over the last five games. After scoring just 15 points in the first four weeks of the season, the Patriots have now scored 94 points in the last five games.
Brewer will close out its season Friday on the road against Priceville.
