Students honor veterans, active military

Hartselle Junior High School students and faculty rolled out the red carpet for veterans and active duty military personnel on Friday as they observed Veterans Day with their annual Veterans Day Program.
More than 250 veterans, representing the Coast Guard, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Air Force were honored guests. Also in attendance were seven uniformed active duty military personnel.
The school’s band kicked off the program by playing the “Sounds of Sousa and later salutes to the Coast Guard, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Air Force. A combined student chorus sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America, My Country.”
Student tributes were given by Hannah Lee, Ashley Boggs, Hunter King, Emme Long, Tillman Landers and Elizabeth Connell.
The posting of the colors was performed by the Austin High School Junior ROTC Preston Adams, student Council president, led the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed veterans other guests.
A highlight of the program was the presentation of the John Frank Parker Freedom Award to teacher Sherry Echols.
Student Chad Scarbrough concluded the program with the playing of “Taps.”
