Nov. 20, 1958-Crestline is to be the official name of the new elementary school in west Hartselle. This designation was recommended by the PTA and approved by Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten.
Nov. 20, 1958-A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lott this morning.
Nov. 20, 1958-Mrs. C. Y. Quinn entertained members of the Hartselle Garden Club in her home this afternoon.
Nov. 21, 1958-Hartselle Presbyterians will begin construction of a new house of worship in the very near future, according to Rev. W. P. Maxwell. The facility will be located on Vaughn Bridge Road, about one hundred yards from Highway 31.
Nov. 22, 1958-A turkey shoot was held at the Falkville High School football field this morning. Proceeds will be used to support Lions Club charities.
Nov. 23, 1958-Senator John Sparkman spoke at Mt. Tabor Methodist Church this morning. This was his boyhood home congregation. Rev. Roy Hewlett is the pastor of the church.
Nov. 23, 1958-Jackie Lee Prince, Hartselle 3, and Sim Parker Garner, Falkville 2, will be inducted into the U.S. Army in December. Nationally, 11,000 men are being drafted, 445 coming
from Alabama.
Nov. 24, 1958-With cotton-picking vacations discontinued, the demand for pickers has increased. Most are being paid $2.50 per hundred pounds with sacks furnished.
Nov. 25, 1958-LSU is ranked number one in this week’s AP football poll followed by Auburn in second place. The Bengal Tigers will be the host team in the Sugar Bowl; Auburn is bowl ineligible.
Nov. 25, 1958-Senator John Sparkman was the guest speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Hartselle Kiwanis Club. The meeting was held at Massey as part of farm-city week activities.
Nov. 25, 1958-Prominent Hartselle resident Mrs. W. B. Bean died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Malone, in Decatur. She had lived in Hartselle for over half a century, her husband being a successful merchant in the town. Mrs. Malone was among the founding members of Hartselle Methodist Church.
Survivors include a grandson, Clark Rountree, Jr., a descendant of another early Hartselle family. Pallbearers were Dee Owen, Leo Barclift, Harold Orr, Herman Puckett, Cecil Johnson, and William Stewart.
Nov. 26, 1958-Alabama’s needy senior citizens have been awarded an $8 post-Christmas bonus by the State Department of Pensions and Security. This will raise the average monthly old age pension to about $50.
Nov. 26, 1958-TB continues to be responsible for more deaths in Alabama than any other contagious disease. Sixty-one new cases were reported last year and 46 people have succumbed to the disease since 1955. One way to combat this dread affliction is to buy and use Christmas seals.
Nov. 26, 1958-The Vaughan Bridge Road between Hartselle and the Decatur-Danville Road is now being paved. In addition the condemned bridge is being supplanted with a new one.
Nov. 26, 1958-People who are about to start mailing their Christmas cards are reminded that first-class postage is now four cents. Cards that are sealed and have no message inside (except a signature) will take a three-cent stamp.
