Brewer rolls to tourney title

FLORETTE - Brewer’s Lady Patriots survived a fourth quarter rally by the Cold Springs Lady Eagles and went on to claim championship honors with a 50-44 win over the Lady Eagles in the Brewer Thanksgiving Tournament Friday night.
Trailing 37-45 after three quarters, the Lady Eagles scored seven points to Brewer’s two in the first two minutes of the final frame and were down by only three (44-47) with six minutes left in the game. At that point, Brewer coach Ricky Allen put his team in a slowdown offense. The move resulted in the Lady Patriots getting fouled twice and converting three of four free throws.
The Lady Eagles had possession of the ball three times but were unable to score.
The Lady Patriots grabbed an early lead over the Class 2A defending state champions and never trailed in the game.
The win improved Brewer’s record to 6-1 on the season while Cold Springs dropped to 6-1.
Emily Dabbs stepped up big for the Lady Patriots with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Kendra Jones had 12 points and Heather Steelman pulled down nine rebounds.
Paige Parker scored 14 points to pace the Lady Eagles. Georgia Myrex and Paylee Myrex had nine and eight points, respectively.
In preliminary rounds, Brewer defeated Good Hope and West Limestone.
