Somerville lands state grant
By Staff
Gov. Bob Riley has awarded a $25,000 grant to assist the Somerville Police Department in better protecting its residents.
The Morgan County municipality will use the grant to purchase a new police car, replacing an older, high-mileage vehicle.
Currently, the department has four vehicles including a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria with more than 212,000 miles.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will administer the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. Local funds of $2,777 will supplement the award.
Riley notified Mayor Ray Long that the grant had been approved.
