Jan. 8, 1959-Arthur Lee, Jr., Max Skidmore, and Leldon Hardin, Jr., area students enrolled at Birmingham-Southern College, have now returned to their studies following the Christmas break.
Jan. 8, 1959-Floyd Hogan has made good progress in the construction of his new home on Crestline Drive despite the occasional bouts of inclement weather.
Jan. 8, 1959-The congregation of Hartselle’s First Church of the Nazarene will relocate to a lot on Danville Road, one block west of Highway 31. The present building, erected in 1935, is on the market for sale.
Jan. 9, 1959-Workers in Alabama make more than those in any other southeastern state. This is not a new phenomenon. Weekly average earnings are $71.71 here; Florida ranks second, $70.24.
Jan. 9, 1959-Bobby Ray Hicks, UA business major, has been chosen for Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Judy Newman, an Auburn coed, has also been chosen for Who’s Who.
Jan. 10, 1959-In preparing for future natural disasters, especially tornadoes, Mrs. H. M. Betterton has been named chairman of the food committee. Daren Easter and Fred Summerford are the co-chairs of the survey committee.

Security benefits are going up. Beginning in February each recipient will receive from three to seven dollars more per month, depending on their present income.
Jan. 11, 1959-The Morgan County Singing Convention met today at Shiloh Baptist Church, east of Hartselle.
Jan. 11, 1959-The new king-size bottles of Coca-Cola are proving to be very popular at Hartselle grocery stores.
Jan. 12, 1959-Homer Hutchinson, the contractor who has been building the new cafeteria at Morgan County Training School, says work is about finished on the project.
Jan. 12, 1959-Mack Bramlett provided good leadership as president of the junior class at Falkville High School during the fall semester and his classmates confidently expect the same thing now that the spring term has begun.
Jan. 12, 1959-Schools at Gum Pond, St. John, and Mt. Nebo that did not operate during the fall term recently ended will remain closed. Elementary students who attended at these three places were transferred to Eva, Moulton Heights, and Somerville. Eighth and ninth grade pupils from Somerville went to Morgan County Training School here in Hartselle. This arrangement gave satisfaction to parents and school administrators alike.
Jan. 13, 1959-Ed Watson, former Hartselle man, is now the owner of Lollar’s fishing camp at Joe Wheeler State Park.
Jan. 13, 1958-Troy Nunn, now superintendent of the Masonic home in Montgomery, was recently at home for a holiday visit.
Jan. 14, 1959-Learner’s permits are available to youth who have just turned 16. To get the permit you need to pass a written test and then, when driving, make sure to always be accompanied by a licensed driver.
Jan. 14, 1959-Pvt.-2c Coy Turney is now stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Va., where he is undergoing training in electrical guided missile repairman’s school. Army Pvt. John W. (Bud) Mayfield recently completed eight weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is a 1955 MCHS graduate.
Jan. 14, 1959-MCHS has a newly designated “good citizenship girl.” She is Pat Hogan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cleon Hogan. Pat is president of the student council, a cheerleader, and a member of the honor society.
