DANVILLE - An early practice gave Danville’s girls’ basketball team a little extra work on its half court game before the Lady Hawks opened with Falkville in the first round of the Morgan County Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Hawks didn’t put much of the practice to use, however.
Danville scored 30 points in the opening quarter and never trailed in a 76-59 victory Tuesday over the Lady Blue Devils to advance to the semifinals. The Lady Hawks will face second-seeded Brewer Friday night.
Ashley Nance scored 15 points and had six rebounds for the Lady Hawks. Kayloni Cross added 12 points, while Lindsay Simmons finished with 10 points.
Morgan Doherty chipped in with eight points.
The Lady Hawks, now 17-7 overall, also got eight rebounds from Chelsea Keenum and seven assists from Lacey Evans.
After a traditonal paced 6-4 start against Falkville, the Lady Hawks turned torrid. Danville used a 22-4 run to put the game out of reach as Falkville head coach Jeff Andrews used a variety of defenses to try to slow down the Lady Hawks.
Nance scored 10 points in the first half to ignite the Lady Hawks’ offensive showcase in front of their own fans.
Katie Annerton scored 15 points in the first half for Falkville and finished with a team-high 21 points. Celese Sharbutt added 13 points for the Lady Blue Devils, while Hilary Eason and Alesia Smith finished with nine and eight points respectively.
