Allen at home on bench

The same pair of shoes, even the same tie.
Brewer varsity girls coach Ricky Allen is a creature of habit. Call it ritualistic or superstitious, even a little regimental. The coach of the Lady Patriots’ program for the past 24 years won’t pull any punches. He’ll tell you exactly where his game routine comes from.
If Allen’s obsession is a little odd, it seems to be working. In his 24 years of coaching Brewer basketball, Allen’s teams have won 14 county championships, including the last three in a row. Brewer has won 11 of the last 13 titles.
Even he admits to being a little amazed that this ride has gone on for 24 years.
Brewer wrapped up its 14th county title Saturday by beating West Morgan. The Lady Patriots have won almost half of the county championships since 1978.
Allen can’t really imagine being anywhere else. He’s at home on the Brewer sideline.
Allen was close to being forced off the bench last September when the school board initially failed to approve his $20,000 supplement to coach the Lady Patriots and teach one class. With the state facing proration, the issue is expected to come up again for consideration this spring.
Allen’s legacy is already written. But he’s still got plenty to teach.
And this group of players, with a roster filled with upperclassmen, have listened well.
That respect for the coach has been a pretty good recipe for success at Brewer.
