Brewer neutralizes Rebels' size advantage

DANVILLE - Brewer head coach Sam Brown has seen his team pick up some momentum over the last couple of weeks.
The Patriots might be at full speed now after handing West Morgan a 59-47 loss in the championship game of the Morgan County Tournament Saturday at Danville High School.
The win was the fifth for the Patriots and gave Brewer its first boys’ varsity county title since 2006.
Brewer has four games remaining in the regular season before opening in the area tournament. The Patriots will play West Morgan again tonight, before hosting Arab and Grissom in the final week of the regular season.
With tournament most valuable player Kohl Sowder running the offense, the Patriots went right at the Rebels. Normally based around its outside shooting attack, the Patriots used strong inside play to hammer at West Morgan in the lane.
Kyle Bowling led Brewer with a double-double performance, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Murray added nine points, while Chris Dickerson finished with eight points.
Justin Jones scored 18 points for the Rebels, who dropped to 21-4 with the loss.
Brewer held a 28-18 advantage at the half, but West Morgan climbed right back into the game with nine straight points from Jones to trim the lead to just one point.
The Patriots regained control with 11 straight points to put West Morgan in a tough situation late in the game.
Brown felt West Morgan started to get frustrated, especially after several players got into foul trouble in the second half.
West Morgan had a decided size advantage in the championship, but Brewer used its speed to overcome the Rebels.
