Funeral for Dewitt Ernest Stringer, 96, of Tusca-loosa, was Friday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. at Oden Ridge Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Magnolia Chapel South directed the graveside service.
Mr. Stringer died Tuesday, Jan 20, 2009, at Heritage Health Care in Tuscaloosa. He was born in 1912 in Klondike, Tex. His family moved to Morgan County in 1915, where he grew up. He worked for the U.S. government in Panama from 1941 to 1944. He married in 1946 and lived in Georgia and north Alabama until he settled his family to Tuscaloosa. He retired from Reichold Chemicals in 1977 and was a member of Hargrove Memorial Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hyacinth Akers Stringer and a brother, John Bruce Stringer.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Dozier and husband James of Northport; two sons, Dewitt B. ‘Sonny’ Stringer and wife Dora of Cottondale and Edwin Stringer and wife Connie of Tuscalooosa; two sisters, Fleda Monk of Hartselle and Reba Linthicum of Litchfield Park, Ariz.; a brother, William Boyd Stringer of Falkville; five grandchildren, Lorie Whatley, Charles Stringer, Dan Stringer, Clint Stringer and Lauren Stringer; two great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were staff and nurses of Heritage Health Care, members of Hargrove Memorial United Methodist Church, members of Von Bayer Masonic Lodge, friends and neighbors of Circlewood.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army, American Red Cross or your favorite charity.
