Feb. 12, 1959-The big donkey basketball game is set for tonight at the Riddle gym. Ed Turner will captain the Civitans while Billy Don Mitchell will lead the Kiwanians.
Feb. 12, 1959-The USDA advises farmers that there is no limit on their number of cucumber plants as far as the ‘59 season is concerned. They may set out all they will be able to harvest.
Feb. 12, 1959-West End Methodist Church will have a full-time pastor next year.
Feb. 12, 1959-J. C. Pettey, principal of M.C.H.S., is in Philadelphia this week for a meeting of the National Principals Association.
Feb. 12, 1959-Hal Butler is editor of the Jacksonville State College yearbook, “The Mimosa.” He is also director of the R.O.T.C. drill team.
Feb. 12, 1959-Robert Clemons’ Star Market is offering a five-pound bag of Mother’s Best flour for 47 cents. Large pink grapefruits are 5 cents each.
Feb. 13, 1959-Jane McDaniel entertained a group of friends with a Valentine party at her home tonight.
Feb. 13, 1959-Merrill Doss was installed as president at the annual meeting of the Hartselle Chamber of Commerce tonight.
Feb. 13, 1958-The latest novel by famed Hartselle author William Bradford Huie will be published this spring by E. P. Dutton and Company. The plot of the book, “The Americanization of Emily,” revolves around an English girl whose life undergoes a series of dramatic changes when she becomes involved with American soldiers in Britain during World War II.
Feb. 14, 1959-A large number participated in a bingo game here tonight at Riddle Auditorium. All proceeds will go to the heart fund drive, according to Mrs. Billy Don Mitchell who coordinated the event.
Feb. 14, 1959-A rabbit hunt began at Wheeler National
Wildlife Refuge today. It will last for six days. In part it is an experiment to determine if winter rabbit hunting on the refuge would be feasible or not. Hunters will have to use shotguns, rifles not being permitted. The daily rabbit limit is six. Dogs may be used if hunters wish to. No hunting will be permitted tomorrow, Sunday. The hunt concludes Feb. 20.
Feb. 15, 1959-Tankersley Service Station was robbed of $5.40 during a break-in tonight. (The four boys who perpetrated the crime were quickly caught and released to the custody of their parents.)
Feb. 16, 1959-A quo warranto hearing to determine which man-Knox McCrae or Richard Hyche-is the real sheriff of Morgan County is scheduled for later today in the circuit courtroom of Judge Newton Powell. Hyche is urging Judge Powell to order McRae to relinquish his keys to him. It will be recalled that McRae was appointed by former Governor Folsom, Hyche by the new governor, John Patterson. The designation of a new sheriff was necessitated by the death of incumbent Sheriff Jimmie Collier.
Feb. 17, 1959-Six Morgan County men boarded a bus for Montgomery this morning. Upon arrival, they will be inducted into the U.S. Army. One local man, Lee Morgan of Hartselle 2, is included in the group. Ten other area men will have pre-induction physicals today as well.
Feb. 18, 1959-Ethelene Langford is the M.C.T.S. 1959 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow.
